Mandatory Credit: David Dermer-Imagn Images New York Yankees right-hander Clarke Schmidt was scratched from his scheduled start on Saturday against the visiting Tampa Bays Rays because of soreness in his left side.
Left-hander Ryan Yarbrough (0-0, 4.11 ERA) will start for the Yankees in the second contest of the three-game series. New York won the opener 3-0 on Friday.
Schmidt (0-1, 5.52) told reporters that he felt additional soreness after tossing a season-high 90 pitches in a no-decision against the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday. He also said the injury was unrelated to the right rotator cuff tendinitis that delayed his season debut.
Yarbrough scattered two hits over 3 2/3 scoreless innings against the Baltimore Orioles on Monday in his last outing but didn't figure into the decision of the 4-3 loss.
He permitted two runs on six hits in 2 2/3 innings of a no-decision in a 6-3 win versus Tampa Bay on April 17. He is 0-0 with a 4.05 ERA in two relief appearances in his career versus the Rays.
