Yankees erase late deficit, end Braves' 8-game win streak in extras

Ryan McMahon lifted a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning and the host New York Yankees rallied for a 3-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Friday night after a lengthy rain delay before the first pitch.

McMahon gave the Yankees their second win in 10 extra-inning games this season when he followed a walk by rookie George Lombard Jr. by lifting a fly ball to right fielder Ronald Acuna Jr. off Tyler Kinley (6-5), Acuna's throw was offline and automatic runner Luis Garcia Jr. easily scored.

New York won for the fifth time in 47 games when trailing through eight innings. McMahon's RBI capped a game was delayed by heavy rains and thunderstorms for one hour and 55 minutes.

David Bednar (5-3) earned the win thanks in part to Lombard's off-balance throw on Sean Murphy's grounder in the 10th and Garcia's over-the-shoulder catch on Acuna for the final out of the inning.

Lombard also sparked New York's rally in the ninth by reaching on an infield single and advancing to third on a two-base error by Raisel Iglesias. After Lombard reached, Austin Wells lined an RBI double, and Ben Rice hit a game-tying single off the right field wall off Iglesias, who blew his third save in 27 chances.

Austin Riley homered in the eighth off Fernando Cruz and Matt Olson went deep in the ninth off Tim Hill as the Braves saw their eight-game winning streak stopped.

After the Braves mustered three hits in 6 1/3 innings against former teammate Max Fried, Riley put them ahead by lifting a full count splitter off Cruz into the left field seats. Riley hit his fifth homer in 20 games since the All-Star break after hitting nine before the break.

Olson tied Kyle Schwarber and Hunter Goodman for the National League lead with his 33rd homer by hitting a drive into the Yankee bullpen in right-center field.

Fried allowed three hits in 6 1/3 innings in his first encounter with his former team since joining the Yankees as a free agent following the 2024 season.

Tyler Mahle allowed three hits in six innings for an impressive debut with Atlanta after being acquired from San Francisco on Sunday. The right-hander struck out nine, walked two and was aided by a leaping catch from center fielder Mauricio Dubon on rookie Spencer Jones in the fourth.
