All-Pro dad: With Deion present, Shedeur Sanders runs Browns' offense

Deion Sanders was in attendance to watch son Shedeur operate the Cleveland Browns' offense in training camp on Thursday.

Deion Sanders, currently the head coach at Colorado where Shedeur Sanders starred at quarterback, huddled with Browns head coach Todd Monken between the two full-squad workouts held Thursday in Berea, Ohio. Deion Sanders Jr. was also present for the session. He watched parts of the workout with his dad and Andrew Siciliano of NFL Network away from crowds at the top row of sideline bleachers.

Shedeur Sanders is squarely in the mix to start for the Browns as Deshaun Watson vies to return in a role he has often been forced to vacate due to injury since coming to Cleveland via trade with the Houston Texans.

Monken admitted he was in awe of Deion Sanders, a Hall of Fame cornerback before his coaching days, as they traded stories of history, on-field conquests and even NIL money before the first-year Browns coach met with the media.

"It was really cool. I mean, Deion Sanders," Monken said. "Are you kidding me? Forget that it's Shedeur's dad. I mean, first of all, he did an unbelievable job with Shedeur, great kid. And obviously (Deion was) an elite football player, hell, baseball player. And then as a coach, I mean -- wow. Everything that he's achieved, that was awesome."

Monken said Deion Sanders talked to with as "part coach, part father, which is what it should be." Sanders declined to talk to reporters, saying he was at camp just to watch.

The coach said he used Watson's back-to-back interceptions on Wednesday's practice as a teachable moment for the entire QB room. The lesson? Don't be late on throws when challenging a player with elite tracking speed like Browns cornerback Denzel Ward.

But Monken didn't disclose what, if anything, he told Deion Sanders about the QB competition other than "what a great job Shedeur's done since I've been here in terms of his development. And so it was good. It was a part coach, part father, which is what it should be."
