Mandatory Credit: Boz Bloom-Imagn Images The Athletics designated struggling right-handed reliever Scott Barlow for assignment prior to Sunday's home game against the Los Angeles Angels.
Barlow, 33, gave up two runs while retiring two batters in Saturday's 7-0 loss to the Angels and has allowed 10 runs in 2 2/3 innings over his last four appearances. He had a 19.29 ERA in seven innings this month.
Overall, Barlow is 2-0 with a 6.48 ERA and two saves in 36 appearances for the A's this season.
In nine big league seasons, Barlow is 31-24 with a 3.79 ERA and 61 saves in 476 appearances (one start) with the Kansas City Royals (2018-23), San Diego Padres (2023), Cleveland Guardians (2024), Cincinnati Reds (2025) and Athletics.
The A's also promoted first baseman Joey Meneses and left-hander Matt Krook from Triple-A Las Vegas and optioned shortstop Alika Williams to the same affiliate.
Meneses is batting .348 with 11 homers, 20 doubles and 76 RBIs in 69 games for the Aviators. He figures to see the majority of his time as the designated hitter -- he's at that spot hitting sixth on Sunday -- with star Nick Kurtz entrenched at first base.
Meneses, 34, spent parts of three seasons (2022-24) with the Washington Nationals and drove in a career-best 89 runs in 2023. He has a .274 career average, 29 homers and 165 RBIs in 286 career major league games.
Krook, 31, was 2-2 with a 3.72 ERA in 25 relief appearances at Las Vegas this season. He made three appearances for the A's last season and had a 5.40 ERA.
Williams, 27, is batting .289 with one homer and five RBIs in 23 games for the A's. He was acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates on May 16 for minor league right-hander Kyle Robinson just days after starting shortstop Jacob Wilson (shoulder) went on the injured list.
The Athletics also transferred right-hander Luis Severino (shoulder) to the 60-day injured list. The 32-year-old is 2-6 with a 4.12 ERA in 12 starts this season.
