Mandatory Credit: Daniel Kucin Jr.-Imagn Images Samuel Basallo hit a two-run home run in the first inning and starter Cade Povich retired the first 12 batters he faced as the Baltimore Orioles defeated the visiting San Francisco Giants 6-2 on Sunday afternoon.
Povich, pitching on his 26th birthday, allowed just five hits and one run while fanning five in his 6 2/3-inning outing.
Pete Alonso drove in two runs with a double while Leody Taveras and Taylor Ward joined Alonso with two hits apiece as the Orioles captured the final two games of the three-game series. With six runs scored in consecutive games, the Orioles matched their second-best two-game scoring output of the season even though they stranded nine runners Sunday and batted 3-for-12 with runners in scoring position.
Casey Schmitt hit a home run and two singles for the Giants. Starter Adrian Houser (0-2) lasted 4 2/3 innings and allowed four runs on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
Alonso drew a two-out walk in the first and scored on Basallo's second home run of the season.
The Giants' first baserunner came when Schmitt led off the fifth with an infield single. He scored on Daniel Susac's two-out single to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Baltimore's two-run fifth came with two-out singles from Gunnar Henderson and Ward before Alonso's double.
The Orioles stretched their lead to 5-1 in the sixth on Coby Mayo's single and tacked on another run in the seventh on Colton Cowser's two-out infield single.
Schmitt cracked a solo home run with one out in the ninth off Wells for his first long ball of the season.
The Giants had a season-best three-game winning streak going into Saturday's game, but they'll carry a two-game losing streak into Tuesday's game at Cincinnati.
