Mandatory Credit: Joe Camporeale-Imagn Images Former undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez will return to the ring against a yet-to-be determined opponent on Sept. 12 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
"Wait for us in September," Saudi sports promoter Turki Alalshikh said in a video on Twitter. "The 12th of September, a big, big, big fight. And this will be the first card for Canelo Promotions. It will be named 'Mexico Against the World.' All the fighters from the team of Canelo against the world. And the champion (Alvarez) in the main event (for) a world title, and it will be a surprise in Saudi Arabia."
Canelo (63-3-2, 39 KOs) is working his way back from arthroscopic surgery on his left elbow on October. The 35-year-old sustained the injury shortly after September's unanimous decision loss to Terence Crawford.
Crawford retired in December, with that decision resulting in the WBC, IBF and WBO super middleweight titles being vacant. Jose Armando Resendiz was elevated to full WBA champion, and Diego Pacheco and Hamzah Sheeraz are expected to battle for the WBO title.
