Mandatory Credit: Jim Rassol-Imagn Images The Chicago Cubs acquired right-hander Edward Cabrera from the Miami Marlins for top prospect Owen Caissie and two other minor leaguers on Wednesday.
Caissie, an outfielder, was the Cubs' No. 1 prospect and has long been coveted by Miami. The Marlins also acquired infielders Cristian Hernandez and Edgardo De Leon in the deal.
Cabrera, 27, has pitched for the Marlins since making his debut in 2021. He is under team control through 2028 and is projected to earn $3.7 million in arbitration in 2026, per MLB Trade Rumors.
He is 25-29 with a 4.07 ERA in 89 career games (87 starts) and 431 2/3 innings. He has recorded 478 strikeouts, 216 walks and a 1.309 WHIP.
Cabrera was 8-7 with a 3.53 ERA in a career-high 26 starts in 2025. He also set career highs for strikeouts (150) and innings pitched (137 2/3).
Cabrera missed time due to injuries in 2025 with a right middle finger blister and a sprained right elbow. He was on the injured list twice in 2024 with a right shoulder impingement.
Caissie, 23, made his major league debut in 2025 and hit .192 (5 for 26) with a homer and four RBIs in 13 games. The Canadian batted .281 with 41 homers and 130 RBIs in 226 games over the past two seasons at Triple-A Iowa.
Last season at Iowa, he batted .286 with 22 homers and 55 RBIs in 99 games. He was a member of the Triple-A All-Star team for the second straight season.
The Cubs acquired Caissie from San Diego following the 2020 season as part of the trade in which right-hander Yu Darvish went to the Padres.
Hernandez, 22, was rated as Chicago's No. 11 prospect by MLB Pipeline. He batted .252 with seven homers, 53 RBIs and 52 stolen bases in 115 games for Class-A South Bend last season.
De Leon, 18, batted .276 with five homers and 15 RBIs in 43 games with the rookie-level Arizona Complex League Cubs in 2025.
Cabrera's name previously popped up as a possibility to help fill holes in the New York Yankees' starting rotation created by the elbow surgeries of Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon and Clarke Schmidt that will keep them all out for the start of the season.
