DA: LeSean McCoy Won't Be Charged In Bar Fight

Bills running back LeSean McCoy won’t be charged for his role in a fight with off-duty cops at a Philadelphia bar in early February, District Attorney Seth Williams announced today. In a release, Williams wrote that there wasn’t “enough evidence to meet the legal threshold to issue charges.” Williams also wrote that, after interviewing numerous witnesses and examining the evidence, his office was unable to determine who started the fight and whether participants were acting in self-defense or not.
A little before 3 a.m. on February 7, McCoy and three friends got into an altercation with three off-duty cops over bottles of champagne that both parties believed belonged to them. According to the police report, two of the cops went to the hospital, one with broken ribs and a broken nose, and the other with a possibly fractured skull.
Soon after the incident, it became clear that the police and district attorney’s office were at odds over the case. The police wanted McCoy and his friends charged immediately, while the DA had questions about the behavior of the off-duty cops—like how much they were drinking and why they didn’t call 911—and wanted to investigate further. After Williams announced charges wouldn’t be filed, the Philadelphia Fraternal Order Of Police Lodge 5, released a blistering statement.
