Mandatory Credit: Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images A stubbed toe kept Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Mookie Betts out of the starting lineup for the start of a World Series-rematch series against the visiting New York Yankees on Friday.
The injury to a toe on Betts' left foot occurred at home, according to Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, who added that Betts was headed for X-rays.
"It's day-to-day right now," Roberts said. "... Hopefully it's benign, it's negative (on the X-rays). Not sure, but I feel confident saying it's day-to-day ... but putting on a shoe today was difficult for him."
It's not the first household incident to sideline a Dodgers star this year. Freddie Freeman sat out for 10 days when a slip in the shower caused a right ankle injury.
"It just keeps coming. It's Murphy's law," Roberts said. "But yeah, this is a weird one."
Betts, 32, is hitting .254 with a .338 on-base percentage, a .405 slugging percentage, eight homers and 31 RBIs in 53 games this year.
The eight-time All-Star and former American League MVP owns a career batting line of .293/.372/.519 with 279 homers and 862 RBIs in 1,434 games for the Boston Red Sox (2014-2019) and the Dodgers (2020-25). He won a World Series title with Boston in 2018 and two with the Dodgers, in 2020 and 2024.
