Henry Bolte had two hits, including an RBI single, and Tommy White notched his second four-hit outing in just 10 big league games for the Athletics. Lawrence Butler added a pinch-hit RBI double as the A's won for just the seventh time in their past 31 games.
Connor Wong hit a two-run homer with two outs in the ninth to bring Boston within one. Anthony Seigler followed with a drive to center that Bolte caught at the wall to end it.
Hogan Harris registered four outs to get his ninth save for the A's, who ended a three-game losing streak.
Wilyer Abreu had a run-scoring single for the Red Sox, who lost for just the third time in the past 21 games. Boston also had a 10-game road winning streak halted.
Jump (4-6) allowed three hits and four walks while striking out seven. The rookie had lost five consecutive outings.
Boston starter Jake Bennett (6-4) permitted three runs and six hits over 6 1/3 innings. He struck out four and walked two as his five-start winning streak ended.
Serven, 31, played in his third big league game of the season. He is currently in the majors due to All-Star catcher Shea Langeliers being sidelined due to a torn meniscus in his right knee. Langeliers underwent surgery on Tuesday.
The Athletics pushed across a run in the second inning. White reached on an infield single, was bunted to second by Colby Thomas and scored on Bolte's single to center.
Bennett was sent out to start the seventh and walked Bolte before Alika Williams laid down a sacrifice bunt. Serven followed by sending a 1-2 fastball over the wall in center for his first homer since 2022 to make it 3-0 and finish Bennett's outing.
Boston scored once in the top of the eighth. Pinch hitter Masataka Yoshida led off the inning with a single to right against Luis Medina, and pinch hitter Seigler drew a walk.
Romy Gonzalez then bounced a grounder into a double play before Willson Contreras walked to end Medina's night.
Harris entered for a lefty-vs.-lefty matchup with Abreu, who grounded a single into right field to drive in Yoshida. Ceddanne Rafaela struck out to end the frame.
The A's got the run back in the bottom of the inning as White singled with one out and scored on Butler's two-bagger to center off Ryan Watson.
Jarren Duran, who had two hits, singled with one out in the ninth. One out later, Wong lined his second homer of the year over the wall in left.
