Giants' home runs help Blake Snell down Nationals

Matt Chapman, Heliot Ramos and Mike Yastrzemski smashed solo homers as the visiting San Francisco Giants beat the Washington Nationals 7-4 on Wednesday night.

Chapman and Ramos went deep off Nationals starter Jake Irvin (8-10) in a decisive fifth inning to give the Giants a two-run lead they didn't relinquish despite some late opportunities for Washington.

Chapman finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and was a triple short of the cycle. Yastrzemski added an RBI triple and scored twice, and Ramos also had two hits and two runs.

Giants starter Blake Snell (2-3), in his first outing since throwing a 114-pitch no-hitter against the Cincinnati Reds on Friday, went six innings. He allowed three runs on four hits and one walk while striking out eight on 93 pitches.

Irvin left after five, having permitted five runs on eight hits and one walk with four strikeouts. San Francisco added a pair of runs against the Washington bullpen and moved to .500 with its ninth win in 12 games. The Nationals had won three of their previous four contests.

Washington got to Snell in a three-run third, but the Giants' offense provided enough run support that San Francisco took a 2-1 edge in the four-game series that concludes Thursday afternoon.

Yastrzemski smashed a 91 mph fastball into the second deck in right to tie the game at 3 in the fourth inning. He hit his RBI triple during a two-run sixth against Nationals reliever Jose Ferrer.

The Giants struck first in the top of the third with two-out RBI singles from Michael Conforto and Chapman.

Snell walked Jacob Young to lead off the bottom of the third. Young moved to second on a misfired pickoff attempt and scored on Alex Call's two-out single to left.

Juan Yepez then smacked a Snell curveball 403 feet into the left field seats for a 3-2 lead. It was just Yepez's third homer of the year and by far the worst inning for Snell in his past six games. The left-hander had allowed only two runs in his previous 35 innings.

The Giants' Erik Miller allowed an RBI single to CJ Abrams in the seventh, cutting the deficit to 7-4. Ryan Walker came on and put the potential tying run on with two outs, but he struck out Yepez to escape a bases-loaded jam.

San Francisco closer Camilo Doval loaded the bases with one out in the ninth but got Call to ground into a game-ending double play for his 22nd save.

Call and Yepez each had two hits.
