Iona fires Tobin Anderson after two seasons
Iona University men's basketball coach Tobin Anderson conducts a practice in Hynes Athletic Center at Iona University in New Rochelle July 27, 2023. The former St. Thomas Aquinas Coach is replacing Rick Pitino, who left Iona for St. John's. Iona fired men's basketball coach Tobin Anderson on Monday after just two seasons.
The Gaels finished 17-17 this season and were 33-34 under Anderson, 53.
Iona's season ended with a 63-49 loss on Saturday to Mount St. Mary's in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament final.
Anderson was hired on a five-year deal on March 21, 2023, to replace Rick Pitino, who departed to become the head coach at St. John's.
Anderson led Fairleigh Dickinson to a 21-16 record in his lone season at that school in 2022-23, including a 63-58 upset of top-seeded Purdue in the NCAA Tournament. It was just the second time a No. 16 seed defeated a No. 1 seed in tournament history.
Before FDU, Anderson compiled a 209-62 record at Division II St. Thomas Aquinas from 2013-22.
ESPN reported that New Orleans Pelicans assistant coach Dan Geriot is a front-runner to replace Anderson.
