Mandatory Credit: Charles LeClaire-Imagn Images New York Islanders forward Jonathan Drouin was suspended one game by the NHL Department of Player Safety on Friday, one day after he cross-checked Connor Dewar of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Drouin was assessed a five-minute major and a game misconduct with 15 seconds left in the third period Thursday. The Penguins spoiled the NHL debut of top overall pick Matthew Schaefer and the season opener for the Islanders with a 4-3 victory in Pittsburgh.
Signed to a two-year, $8 million contract in the offseason, Drouin scored a goal for the Islanders. The one-game suspension is without pay and will cost Drouin more than $20,000, which will go to the NHL's Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.
Drouin, 30, has totaled 375 points (108 goals, 267 assists) in 608 career games with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Montreal Canadiens, Colorado Avalanche and Islanders. He was selected by the Lightning with the third overall pick of the 2013 NHL Draft.
