Mandatory Credit: Robert Edwards-Imagn Images Bo Horvat scored the overtime winner as the visiting New York Islanders edged the San Jose Sharks 2-1 on Saturday night.
Horvat, on a partial break, put a backhand between the legs of Yaroslav Askarov for his 27th tally of the season at 4:20 of the extra period.
Tony DeAngelo scored in regulation for the Islanders, who avoided a third straight loss and improved to 9-0 in overtime this season.
Ilya Sorokin made 30 saves to improve to 5-0-3 in eight career appearances against the Sharks.
Macklin Celebrini scored in regulation and Askarov stopped 32 shots for San Jose, which has dropped back-to-back games in overtime.
With less than a minute remaining in the third on a Sharks power play, Will Smith took a Celebrini feed on a partial break, but Sorokin got his glove on the shot.
Colin Graf had an excellent chance for the Sharks with 1:36 left, but couldn't get his backhander between the pads of Sorokin.
The Islanders had plenty of opportunity to net the go-ahead goal early in the third, outshooting the Sharks 7-2 six minutes in.
Horvat had the best chances for New York five minutes in when he got a shot off alone in the slot and had a chance at the rebound, but Askarov was in position to shut the door.
The Islanders opened the scoring at 11:37 of the first period as DeAngelo beat Askarov under the arm with a shot from the point for his fifth of the season.
Celebrini tied it 1-1 33 seconds into the middle frame, snapping a Smith feed past Sorokin for his team-leading 32nd, extending his point streak to five games (four goals, four assists).
With the goal, Celebrini has 89 points, tying Steve Yzerman for the ninth-most points in a season by a teenager.
Saturday's game was the second and final meeting this season between the Islanders and Sharks. New York edged visiting San Jose 4-3 on Oct. 21.
