Jonathan Quick shines as Rangers end skid, beat Bruins
Jan 2, 2025; New York, New York, USA; New York Rangers goaltender Jonathan Quick (32) makes a save on a shot on goal attempt in the first period against the Boston Bruins at Madison Square Garden. Mandatory Credit: Wendell Cruz-Imagn Images Jonathan Quick made 32 saves and recorded his 399th career regular-season victory as the host New York Rangers snapped a four-game losing streak with a 2-1 victory over the Boston Bruins on Thursday night.
Elevated to New York's No. 1 goalie for at least three games until Igor Shesterkin returns from an upper-body injury, Quick earned his first win since beating the Montreal Canadiens Nov. 30. He is one away from joining Minnesota's Marc-Andre Fleury and Florida's Sergei Bobrovsky as the third active goalie to reach 400 career wins.
After allowing 14 goals in his previous three starts, Quick helped the Rangers win for the fifth time in 20 games (5-15-0) and stop a four-game slide at home.
Mika Zibanejad and rookie Brett Berard scored 3:05 apart in the first period after the Rangers began slowly.
Quick was only beaten by Elias Lindholm 7:57 into the second and highlighted his outing with a diving stick save on a slap shot by Charlie McAvoy with 5:27 remaining in the second. Quick also made consecutive stops on David Pastrnak early in the third and made a glove save on Andrew Peeke's long shot through traffic with 3:45 to go.
Boston goalie Jeremy Swayman made 25 saves.
The Rangers opened the scoring with 10:12 remaining in the first by capitalizing on a misplay in front of the net by Boston defenseman Nikita Zadorov.
After Zadorov lost the puck on a clearing try in front of Swayman, Zibanejad went to the left side and converted the easy tap-in of Reilly Smith's backhand pass through the crease.
New York doubled its lead following another misplay by a Boston defenseman.
After Mason Lohrei lost the puck at the blue line in the offensive zone, Filip Chytil sprung Berard on a 2-on-1. Berard motored down the right side, stopped in the faceoff circle and before Peeke could cover, he sent a shot over Swayman's arm for a 2-0 lead.
Quick kept the shutout going by making a diving save on Johnny Beecher with 12:35 remaining but 32 seconds later, Lindholm slipped past Smith to the lower edge of the right faceoff circle and converted Pastrnak's cross-ice pass.
