Mandatory Credit: David Dermer-Imagn Images Jose Ramirez clubbed a three-run homer and added an RBI single and Kyle Manzardo also went deep as the Cleveland Guardians won their fourth straight, a 6-4 victory over the visiting New York Yankees on Monday night.
Steven Kwan, Brayan Rocchio and Angel Martinez each posted two hits, while Gavin Williams (2-1) allowed just Jasson Dominguez's two-run homer and struck out eight in 6 1/3 innings for the Guardians, who are 10-3 since losing six of their first nine. Manzardo followed Ramirez's three-run bash in the third inning with his own long ball to give the hosts a 4-0 run lead in the opener of a three-game series.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. clubbed a two-run homer for the Yankees, who had star Aaron Judge at the plate as the potential tying run in the ninth, but he struck out swinging against Cade Smith (one save) for the final out. Making his second start of the season, New York's Clarke Schmidt (0-1) yielded both Cleveland homers, seven hits and walked three while striking out seven in four innings.
New York entered this rematch of the 2024 American League Championship Series a winner in six of its last seven.
In the third, after back-to-back singles to Rocchio and Kwan, Schmidt fanned Nolan Jones. However, Ramirez followed by golfing a pitch into the right field seats for a 3-0 lead, then Manzardo barely cleared the right-center-field wall.
The Guardians loaded the bases with one out in the fourth, but managed only one run. Martinez doubled, went to third on a groundout, then scored via Rocchio's broken-bat single that spooked second baseman Chisholm.
Ramirez came through with a two-out single that scored Kwan from second in the sixth against Yoendrys Gomez.
New York finally got to Williams, who also allowed seven hits and two walks, in the seventh. Anthony Volpe opened the frame with a single and scored on Dominguez's 445-foot drive into the right-center-field seats.
With Paul Sewald on the mound and two outs in the eighth, Paul Goldschmidt (two hits) singled off the third base bag and Chisholm followed with a lined shot over the right field seats to make it 6-4.
Yankees outfielder Trent Grisham was placed on the paternity list Monday.
