Kansas State tabs Belmont's Casey Alexander as coach
Belmont head coach Casey Alexander disputes a call during the second half against Lipscomb at Allen Arena in Nashville, Tenn., Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2019.
Lips Bel 112019 025 Kansas State hired Belmont's Casey Alexander on Friday as head coach of the men's basketball team.
Alexander, who coached his alma mater for the past seven seasons, agreed to a five-year contract with the Wildcats. The deal will pay Alexander $3.3 million in 2026-27, and he will receive a $50,000 base salary increase each following season.
"I'm incredibly excited to join the team at K-State and can't wait to get the journey started," Alexander said. "K-State has such a rich tradition and a wildly passionate fan base and I'm grateful for the opportunity provided by (athletic director) Gene Taylor to be a part of it."
Alexander effectively replaces Jerome Tang, who was fired on Feb. 15. The Wildcats limped to a 12-20 record, ending with a 105-91 setback to BYU in the first round of the Big 12 tournament on Tuesday.
Alexander, 53, led Belmont to a 26-6 record this season en route to capturing the 2026 Missouri Valley Conference championship. He owns a 166-60 mark during his seven seasons with the Bruins and a 303-180 record with Stetson (2011-13), Lipscomb (2013-19) and Belmont.
"We couldn't be more excited to announce Casey Alexander as the next head men's basketball coach at K-State," Taylor said. "We had significant interest in our job from numerous talented and successful coaches from around the country.
"What was evident throughout the search was the positive reputation of K-State basketball, and of the coaches we talked with Casey emerged as the one who best fit our program. He is known nationally as a tremendous evaluator of talent and one of the best offensive minds in the college game. He has built and maintained successful and winning programs at Stetson, Lipscomb and Belmont, and his reputation of developing players and a strong culture all make him a perfect fit for us."
