Kirill Kaprizov's hat trick lifts Wild, accelerates Red Wings' slide

Kirill Kaprizov notched a hat trick, including the go-ahead goal with 1:51 remaining, as the visiting Minnesota Wild defeated the fading Detroit Red Wings, 5-4, on Sunday.

After Minnesota squandered a 4-1 lead in the first 15 minutes of the third period, Kaprizov scored his third goal of the afternoon and 43rd of the season on a power play as he ripped a shot from the right circle past Detroit goaltender Cam Talbot off a Matt Boldy feed.

Boldy had a goal as the Wild reached the 100-point mark for the first time since 2023. Vladimir Tarasenko also scored and Ryan Hartman and Mats Zuccarello added two assists apiece. Filip Gustavsson made 18 saves for the Wild (44-21-12, 100 points).

Axel Sandin-Pellikka and Patrick Kane each had a goal and an assist for Detroit, but Kane committed the tripping penalty that led to Minnesota's winning goal.

Albert Johansson and J.T. Compher also scored for the Red Wings (40-29-8, 88 points), who have lost four of their past five games and nine of their last 13 contests while going 4-8-1 in that span.

Talbot had 15 saves while making his first start since March 4.

Johansson scored 1:40 into the contest to enable the Red Wings to take the lead into the dressing room.

Everything changed during the first two minutes of the second. Boldy scored from the right circle just 18 seconds into the period.

Kaprizov was credited with his first goal of the game at 1:25. Hartman, whose four-game goal streak was snapped, took a shot from the right side that deflected off Kaprizov's leg and past Talbot.

Seconds after the Red Wings killed off a penalty, Tarasenko scored from a tough angle on the right side to make it 3-1.

Kaprizov then scored his second goal of the game. Brock Faber dished the puck out of his zone to Kaprisov, who got behind the Red Wings' defense. He ripped a shot from the left circle that beat Talbot on the stick side to make it 4-1 at the 12:32 mark of the second.

Sandin-Pellikka began Detroit's third-period comeback at 7:18 with a shot from the point. Compher then scored on a tip-in and Kane tied it when he flipped the puck past Gustavsson off an Alex DeBrincat feed.
