Sokolowski-Imagn Images Lorenzo Insigne scored early in the second half to spark host Toronto FC to a 2-0 victory over D.C. United on Saturday afternoon.
Toronto snapped a two-match losing streak while scoring for the first time in three weeks. Toronto (2-6-4, 10 points) also benefited from an own goal at the 66-minute mark.
Though D.C. United (3-6-3, 12 points) enjoyed slightly more possession time than Toronto throughout the match - 52 percent to 48 - D.C. translated that into just five shots on goal as it missed out on the chance to win back-to-back matches for the first time this season.
Toronto FC's dominance began from the outset as they owned the first half with 14 shot attempts (five on goal) compared to one shot on net for D.C. United.
The match was scoreless until the third minute of the second half when Insigne, who was on the outs with new coach Robin Fraser when the season began, drove home a header off a pass from Theo Corbeanu.
For the 33-year-old Italian, who sat out Toronto's first four matches this season, it was his first MLS goal since last June. Insigne also set up Toronto's other goal in the 66th minute. He launched a cross that D.C. defender Lucas Bartlett booted into his own net while trying to clear the ball.
Toronto goalkeeper Sean Johnson recorded five saves for his 106th career shutout, which ranks fourth all-time. D.C. United keeper Luis Barraza posted eight saves.
