Mandatory Credit: John Jones-Imagn Images Lucas Raymond scored the tiebreaking goal with 3:47 remaining in the third period and the visiting Detroit Red Wings overcame a stellar performance by Jonathan Quick to earn a 2-1 victory over the New York Rangers on Sunday night.
Raymond had a goal and an assist after getting three assists Saturday, when Detroit blew a three-goal lead in an overtime loss to the Buffalo Sabres.
Raymond snapped a 1-1 tie by weaving his way through the offensive zone after New York's Alexis Lafreniere lost the puck to Moritz Seider near the neutral zone. Seider stole the puck, fed Dylan Larkin and Raymond gained possession as he crossed the blue line.
Raymond charged down the left side, moved around New York defenseman Carson Soucy and circled the net. He faked a shot from near the right circle before moving between the circles and lifted the puck over Quick, who was sprawled out on the edge of the crease.
Alex DeBrincat scored a power-play goal in the second period for the Red Wings, who ended a seven-game losing streak to the Rangers.
Mika Zibanejad scored on the power play in the second for the Rangers, who were unable to get a fourth straight win as coach Mike Sullivan missed the contest due to personal reasons.
Before Raymond's goal, the Red Wings were frustrated by Quick for most of the night. Quick made 40 saves, including 15 on Detroit's five power plays.
Quick stopped Larkin and Patrick Kane seven times apiece. He also stopped Raymond six times, including a sprawling save with about eight minutes left.
Detroit's Cam Talbot stopped 18 shots against his original team.
Quick stopped the first 19 shots until the Red Wings scored during a hooking penalty on rookie Noah Laba.
Raymond's shot from the right circle was stopped by Quick but trickled by him and DeBrincat tapped the loose puck into the vacated left side of the net with 10 1/2 minutes left in the period.
Zibanejad answered for the Rangers during a delay of game penalty on Moritz Seider by getting to the edge of the crease.
Artemi Panarin's shot from the middle of the slot was deflected by Will Cuylle, who tapped the puck to Zibanejad. Zibanejad skated past Detroit rookie Marco Kasper, gained possession and tied it by lifting the rebound into the vacated right of the net with 8:01 left.
