Luis Arraez rips four hits, including HR, as Padres beat Reds
San Diego Padres Luis Arraez (4) runs past Cincinnati Reds third baseman Elly De La Cruz (44) in the1st inning after hitting a homer 374 feet Wednesday, May 22, 2024 at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati. Luis Arraez opened the game with his first homer and finished with four hits while Michael King allowed three runs over 6 2/3 innings as the visiting San Diego Padres beat the Cincinnati Reds 7-3 on Wednesday.
San Diego wasted no time snapping a 19-inning scoreless streak when Arraez drove a 3-2 fastball from Cincinnati's Nick Martinez (1-3) over the wall in right for his first homer of the season, coming in his 16th game since being acquired by the Padres from the Miami Marlins.
Jeimer Candelario homered and singled while Tyler Stephenson added a two-run double for the Reds, who lost for the 19th time in 25 games.
The Reds tied the game in the bottom of the first when Candelario countered with his fifth homer, a solo shot of his own off King.
King (4-4) returned to form on Wednesday, allowing just the Candelario home run over the first five innings before the Reds rallied for two on the Stephenson double in the sixth. King escaped when shortstop Tyler Wade made a leaping grab of a Mike Ford liner to end the inning.
King pitched two outs deep into the seventh before Wandy Peralta struck out Will Benson to end the frame. King allowed three runs on four hits over 6 2/3 innings, striking out six and walking two.
The Padres broke the 1-1 tie in the fourth when Jurickson Profar slid head-first ahead of throw from Jonathan India on a David Peralta grounder on a drawn-in infield. India's throw was on the first base side allowing Profar to score easily for the 2-1 Padres lead.
San Diego broke the game open and knocked Martinez from the game in a three-run fifth.
Fernando Tatis Jr. singled home Luis Campusano and Profar doubled home Tatis to make it 4-1 and send Martinez to the showers.
Martinez sustained his second loss in as many starts against his former team, allowing five runs on eight hits over 4 2/3 innings. In two starts over 9 2/3 innings, Martinez was charged with 10 runs -- eight earned -- on 14 hits.
Jake Cronenworth followed with a single off reliever Brent Suter to score Profar for a 5-1 lead.
The game was finished in a heavy rain storm with lightning in the area.
