Mateen Cleaves Is Being Investigated For Sexual Assault
Wayne County (Michigan) prosecutors are investigating former NBA player Mateen Cleaves for a possible sexual assault. The case was initially to be processed in Genesee County, but it was transferred due to a potential conflict of interest. Genesee County prosecutor David Leyton told MLive:
“My family has a relationship with a witness,” Leyton said. “I sought an opinion from the Prosecuting Attorneys Association. Its executive director recommended recusal, as did my management team.”
Cleaves was named Big Ten Player of the Year twice while at Michigan State. The Pistons selected him 14th overall in the 2000 draft and he played for the Kings, Celtics, Supersonics, and Cavaliers, before going into the booth with FOX and then CBS. No further details from the case are known and he has not been charged.
