Mandatory Credit: Aaron Doster-Imagn Images CHARLOTTE -- Max Homa shot a 7-under-par 64 to move into contention in the PGA Championship's second round Friday at Quail Hollow Club.
It marked Homa's best round in a major by three strokes, putting him at 5 under for the tournament. He began the round with 30 on backside, including back-to-back 2s on Nos. 13 and 14.
France's Matthieu Pavon and England's Aaron Rai also moved to 5 under by early afternoon with several holes still to play.
First-round leader Jhonattan Vegas of Venezuela played the frontside in even par in the second round, maintaining his spot atop the leaderboard at 7 under with nine holes to play. His lone birdie came on No. 7.
Cameron Davis, the Australian who shared second place through the first round, dropped on the leaderboard but still has time to make up ground.
Ryan Gerard, who also ended Thursday at 5 under, was slated to begin his second round at 2:26 p.m. ET.
The course dried out after rain earlier in the week. Friday has turned into a hot, muggy day, particularly for golfers playing in the afternoon.
