MLB roundup: Alex Bregman hits 3 of Cubs' club-record 9 home runs

Alex Bregman hit three of the Cubs' franchise-record nine home runs in Chicago's 17-3 win against the visiting Milwaukee Brewers on Monday.

Tyrone Taylor, Nico Hoerner, Carson Kelly, Matt Shaw, Seiya Suzuki and Michael Conforto also homered for Chicago, which hit 62 home runs in August, the most by a team in any month in National League history.

Clay Holmes (6-6) threw six shutout innings for the Cubs, who had lost four of their previous five games.

Brewers left-hander Kyle Harrison (10-4) was tagged for 10 hits and a season-high nine runs in 3 2/3 innings. Cooper Pratt singled, homered and drove in two runs for Milwaukee, which had won four of five.

Red Sox 9, Mariners 8 (10 innings)

Trevor Story singled with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning, pushing Boston over visiting Seattle.

Story's one-out single came against Cooper Criswell (2-2). Leadoff hitter Nick Sogard laid down a sacrifice bunt, and the Mariners issued two intentional walks before Story came through. Story also had a two-run double to bring the Red Sox within 8-7 with two outs in the eighth.

Randy Arozarena had four hits, including a solo home run and a double, and drove in four runs for the Mariners. Cal Raleigh also homered while Dominic Canzone had two hits and two RBIs for Seattle, which took its fifth loss in a row.

Orioles 2, Rockies 1

Baltimore center fielder Colton Cowser robbed Jake McCarthy of a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning, sealing the Orioles' win over Colorado in rainy Denver.

Baltimore has won four straight and eight of the last 10. With two outs and Ryan Ritter on second, Cowser jumped and reached over the wall to take a walk-off homer away from McCarthy. Grant Wolfram (6-2) tossed two innings of scoreless relief before Andrew Kittredge picked up his ninth save for the Orioles, who reached .500 for the first time since the end of April.

Troy Johnston and Hunter Goodman doubled for the Rockies, who have lost a franchise-record 10 straight home games and five in a row overall.

Padres 5, Reds 0

Manny Machado had four hits, Ty France had three and Michael King pitched out of early trouble to post six scoreless innings, leading San Diego over host Cincinnati.

The Padres snapped a three-game losing streak. Jackson Merrill went 2-for-4 with an RBI and robbed Sal Stewart of a home run in center, while King (9-9) recorded six strikeouts and allowed four hits and three walks.

Brady Singer (5-13) was tagged for four runs on 10 hits over 4 1/3 innings for the Reds, who had won three of their previous four games.

Mets 3, Rays 2

Mark Vientos homered while playing his first game in seven weeks, Robert Stock notched his first major league win in seven years, and New York edged Tampa Bay in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Stock (1-3) tossed 5 1/3 scoreless innings. Vientos, returning from a fractured right hand, notched a solo shot in the seventh inning as the Mets won for the second time in six games.

Rays starter Ian Seymour (9-6) yielded three runs on six hits over 6 1/3 innings. He struck out 10 as Tampa Bay had a four-game winning streak end. Chandler Simpson and Liam Hicks each had two hits and an RBI.

Angels 10, Yankees 1

Rookie Walbert Urena allowed one run over seven innings and Vaughn Grissom went 3-for-5 with two doubles and four RBIs as Los Angeles snapped a seven-game losing streak with a victory over New York in Anaheim, Calif.

Urena (9-9) gave up five hits, didn't walk a batter and struck out eight, matching his career high. Mike Trout collected two hits and two RBIs, Wade Meckler had two hits and two walks and Christian Moore doubled, singled and drove in two runs for the Angels.

Spencer Jones hit a home run and Amed Rosario and Cody Bellinger each had two hits for the Yankees, who had a five-game winning streak at Angel Stadium snapped. Elmer Rodriguez (0-3) remained winless in six career starts, allowing four runs on four hits in 3 2/3 innings.

Giants 7, Braves 3

Rafael Devers hit his 30th home run, Osleivis Basabe ignited a four-run sixth inning with a solo shot and San Francisco won in a makeup game at Atlanta.

Former Braves right-hander Anthony Molina (2-0) limited his old mates to three runs in five innings. Jonah Cox, who homered, joined teammates Bryce Eldridge, Andrew Knizner and Nate Furman in collecting two hits apiece.

Braves starter Bryce Elder (8-8) was charged with five runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings. Michael Harris II went deep, and he and Drake Baldwin and Austin Riley each had two hits.

Nationals 6, Marlins 3

Reigning National League Player of the Week Daylen Lile went 3-for-3 with a pair of two-run homers and Washington rallied past visiting Miami.

His fourth multi-homer game of the year gave Lile 20 round-trippers on the season for Washington, which took three of four from Miami. Matt Waldron (2-2) pitched three scoreless innings of relief for the win, and Erik Tolman tossed two hitless innings for his first career save.

Marlins starter Ryan Gusto gave up a run on four hits over 4 1/3 innings before Josh Ekness (1-2) yielded three runs while getting just one out. Kyle Stowers had two hits and two RBIs.

Phillies 2, Diamondbacks 1

Bryson Stott hit a 464-foot homer, Aaron Nola won for the third time in four starts, and Philadelphia beat Arizona in Phoenix for its fifth win in a row.

Bryce Harper had two hits including an RBI double as the Phillies wrapped up August at 21-7, the best record in the majors. Nola (6-10) gave up one run in five-plus innings. Jhoan Duran pitched around two infield singles and a wild pitch in the ninth for his 29th save.

Gabriel Moreno had two hits and an RBI for the Diamondbacks. Ketel Marte went 1-for-3 with a walk in his return after missing 13 games following his disappearance from the team and later placement on the injured list.

Twins 11, Tigers 1

Ryan Jeffers connected for two of the Twins' four home runs in Minnesota's win against Detroit in Minneapolis.

Jeffers went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and Taj Bradley (10-6) struck out nine while allowing one run in seven innings as the Twins won their second game in a row. Walker Jenkins and Kody Clemens also homered while Luke Keaschall had two hits and three runs.

Tigers starter Jackson Jobe (1-2) gave up five runs, four earned, on six hits in five innings. Hao-Yu Lee homered and singled for Detroit, which took its 10th loss in 12 games.

Rangers 8, Athletics 1

Jacob deGrom threw seven scoreless innings while Brandon Nimmo and Cody Freeman each had two hits and two RBIs as Texas earned a victory over the Athletics in Arlington, Texas.

deGrom (10-9) allowed just one single and struck out eight. Justin Foscue homered for the Rangers, who won their second straight game and pulled within 1 1/2 games of the Cleveland Guardians for the third and final American League wild card.

Gage Jump (6-9) went 4 1/3 innings and yielded seven runs on six hits for the A's, who dropped their fourth straight game.

Astros 6, White Sox 3

Nelson Velazquez slugged a mammoth two-run homer, Cam Smith recorded two extra-base hits and two RBIs, and Houston defeated visiting Chicago in the opener of a four-game series between first-place clubs.

The Astros registered their fifth victory in seven games. Houston reliever Enyel De Los Santos (3-3) threw one scoreless inning, and Bryan Abreu tossed a hitless ninth inning for his eighth save. Astros starter Peter Lambert allowed two runs on three hits in 4 2/3 innings.

The White Sox took a second consecutive loss following a four-game winning streak. Colson Montgomery finished 2-for-3 with a homer, a double and two walks. Anthony Kay (9-7) was tagged for six runs, five earned, on six hits in 4 2/3 innings.
