Notre Dame Beats South Carolina On Late Jumper For Championship Berth
Notre Dame has booked its ticket to the championship game thanks to a clutch rebound and jumper from Madison Cable.
The Fighting Irish were locked in an intense battle of No. 1 seeds with South Carolina down the stretch of the first game of the women’s Final Four. Notre Dame led most of the way, and took a 62-50 lead with over eight minutes to go.
That’s when the Gamecocks mounted a furious comeback, going on a 15-2 run to take a 65-64 lead with just over a minute to go. South Carolina had the ball up one with 43 seconds to go, but couldn’t extend the lead after an Aleighsa Welch missed jumper.
Notre Dame brought the ball back down the court, and its first go-ahead attempt was blocked. Cable grabbed the rebound off the miss and hit a quick, turnaround J to put the Fighting Irish ahead 66-65 with 18 seconds to go. The Gamecocks had a chance to win with the last shot, but Tiffany Mitchell missed a three-pointer as time expired.
Here’s how the wild finish sounded in Spanish:
Notre Dame will play the winner of Maryland and UConn for the championship.
