Mandatory Credit: Wendell Cruz-Imagn Images The San Diego Padres activated Griffin Canning to start Sunday's game against the Chicago White Sox and placed fellow right-hander German Marquez on the 15-day injured list.
Canning will be pitching in a major league game for the first time since rupturing his Achilles tendon last June as a member of the New York Mets. He was 7-3 with a 3.77 ERA in 16 starts for New York.
Canning, who turns 30 on May 11, was 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA in five rehab starts at Triple-A El Paso.
The Padres pushed back Randy Vasquez's start to Monday against the San Francisco Giants to slot Canning in against the White Sox.
"He's going to be great," Padres manager Craig Stammen said. "He's excited to get past that Achilles injury. He's put in a ton of hard work. You guys saw it all through spring training, and now he's had a bunch of rehab starts."
For his career, Canning is 32-37 with a 4.65 ERA in five seasons with the Los Angeles Angels (2019-21, 2023-24) and one campaign with the Mets.
Marquez is dealing with forearm nerve inflammation. He is 3-2 with a 5.76 ERA in six starts in his first season with the Padres.
