Mandatory Credit: Jerome Miron-Imagn Images Texas Rangers right-hander Jack Leiter was scheduled to start against the Miami Marlins on Tuesday, but he landed on the 15-day disabled list on Sunday, retroactive to Friday, due to a right ankle impingement.
Leiter, 26, was replaced on the active roster by right-hander Jose Corniell, who was called up from Triple-A Round Rock.
Amid a subpar season, Leiter is 3-7 with a 5.29 ERA in 15 starts over 80 innings. Over three seasons with the Rangers, Leiter is 13-20 with a 4.95 ERA in 53 games (50 starts) since Texas drafted him No. 2 overall in the 2021 draft.
Corniell, who turns 23 on Monday, made his major league debut last season with the Rangers, appearing in one game in relief. He allowed four runs (three earned) on three hits in 1 2/3 innings.
At Round Rock this season, Corniell - the Rangers' No. 4 prospect according to MLB Pipeline - has posted an 0-2 record with a 6.08 ERA in 26 2/3 innings. Corniell came over to the Rangers on Dec. 15, 2020, in a trade that sent right-hander Rafael Montero to the Seattle Mariners.
