Rangers place SS Corey Seager on 7-day concussion IL

Mandatory Credit: Jay Biggerstaff-Imagn Images The Texas Rangers will be without Corey Seager again, this time after the shortstop was placed on the seven-day concussion list on Monday.
Seager was injured Thursday in a collision at home plate with Kansas City Royals catcher Carter Jensen. He stayed in the game and later homered but missed the entire weekend series against the Boston Red Sox before Texas made the move. Infielder Josh Smith was reinstated from the 10-day injured list in a corresponding roster move.
The IL stint is the second of the season for Seager, who missed nearly three weeks due to lower back inflammation. He returned June 5 after missing 19 games but played only five games, and now heads back to the shelf while the Rangers wait for his concussion symptoms to clear.
The timing creates another challenge for a Texas team still hanging around the playoff race despite an inconsistent first half. Seager has also underperformed at the plate by his standards, batting .186 with nine home runs, 24 RBIs and a .657 OPS in 47 games.
The Rangers have not announced a firm timeline beyond the minimum seven days, which is common with concussion-related injuries. The move was made retroactive to Friday.
Smith had been sidelined since early May because of a strained glute, an inflamed left wrist and viral meningitis symptoms. He got into the Rangers' 4-3 loss to the visiting Minnesota Twins on Monday and fouled out as a pinch hitter.
In 32 games this season, Smith is batting .215 with a .321 on-base percentage, a .237 slugging percentage, no homers and six RBIs.
