Mandatory Credit: Scott Marshall-Imagn Images Curtis Mead suffered a broken left wrist in his first game for the Boston Red Sox following a trade over the weekend.
The Red Sox will place Mead on the injured list after tests Tuesday revealed a fracture in the infielder's wrist.
Mead joined the team in California as the Red Sox began a series against the Athletics on Monday. He started the opener at second base, batted second in the order and, in his second plate appearance, took a Jack Perkins fastball to the wrist.
He stayed in the game another inning-plus before Anthony Seigler took his place.
"It kind of doesn't feel real," Mead told reporters Tuesday after the diagnosis.
The Red Sox dealt left-handed starting pitcher Connelly Early on Sunday to the Washington Nationals to acquire Mead in a one-for-one deal.
Mead, 25, has enjoyed a career season with 17 homers, 48 RBIs, 39 walks and a .253 batting average in 88 games. That has pushed his career numbers to a .244 average with 22 home runs and 79 RBIs in 240 games for the Tampa Bay Rays (2023-25), Chicago White Sox (2025), Nationals and Red Sox.
