Red Sox left fielder Roman Anthony was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right hand sprain on Thursday, retroactive to Tuesday.

Anthony sustained the injury, which the team initially called a wrist sprain, on Monday in Detroit. Anthony clarified on Thursday that he sprained a ligament under his right ring finger.

Anthony has a slash line of .229/.354/.321 with one homer and five RBIs in 30 games this season.

In a corresponding move, 30-year-old catcher and infielder Mickey Gasper was recalled from Triple-A Worcester. Gasper, who was a late call-up to Team Italy in the World Baseball Classic in March, had a .296 average with six home runs and 27 RBIs in 28 games for the Triple-A club this season.

Masataka Yoshida is expected to replace Anthony in the starting lineup as the DH. The outfield will be covered by Jarren Duran, Ceddanne Rafaela and Wilyer Abreu.

The soonest Anthony could be activated is May 15, when the Red Sox will be in Atlanta for the first game of a road trip. Based on what the medical staff told him, the 21-year-old is optimistic that he can return then.

"It kind of heals on its own," Anthony told reporters before Thursday's game. "So, it's one of those things, when you feel like you're able to go, you're good to go."
