Lalonde, 52, is 13-17-4 in his third season on the bench and 89-86-23 overall. Detroit is seventh in the Atlantic Division and on pace to miss the playoffs for the ninth straight season.
McLellan, 57, was fired as head coach of the Los Angeles Kings last February after compiling a 164-130-44 record over four-plus seasons. He has a career record of 598-412-134 with the San Jose Sharks (2008-15), Edmonton Oilers (2015-18) and Kings (2019-24).
McLellan has guided his teams to the Stanley Cup Playoffs nine times. His Sharks reached the Western Conference finals in 2010 and 2011.
The Red Wings have been outscored 13-4 during a three-game losing streak, including a 4-0 home loss against the St. Louis Blues in their most recent game on Monday. They return to the ice Friday against the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs.
Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman also relieved associate coach Bob Boughner of his duties and hired Trent Yawney as an assistant coach.
