Mandatory Credit: Troy Taormina-Imagn Images The Cincinnati Reds recalled former first-round draft pick Chase Petty to start Monday's series opener on the road against the Chicago Cubs.
Petty will take the roster spot of right-hander Zach Maxwell, who was optioned to Triple-A Louisville.
Petty, 23, made his major league debut last season for the Reds with three appearances (two starts). He was 2-2 with a 4.38 ERA in six starts for Louisville this season.
The No. 26 overall selection in the 2021 MLB Draft by the Minnesota Twins, Petty will move into the rotation spot left vacant when left-hander Brandon Williamson went on the 15-day injured list Thursday with shoulder fatigue.
Petty was acquired by Cincinnati in the 2022 trade that sent right-hander Sonny Gray to Minnesota.
Maxwell, 25, was charged with four runs in one inning on Friday against the Pittsburgh Pirates in his lone big league outing this season. He has a 7.36 ERA in nine relief appearances over the past two seasons for Cincinnati.
