Report: 49ers Lock Up Jimmy Garoppolo For $74 Million Guaranteed
Photo: Joe Robbins/ [object Object] A few months after trading for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, the 49ers have reportedly signed him to a huge extension. NBC Bay Area’s Raj Mathai first reported the extension. Although Mike Garafolo said the QB’s getting a record-high $137.5 million over five years, because of the flimsy nature of NFL contracts, that number means far less than the reportedly guaranteed $74 million:
Garoppolo was fantastic in his short stint with the 49ers at the end of last season, and while the 49ers are sure he’s their franchise quarterback, that’s a lot of money to pay for a dude who’s only started seven games in his career. Now that Kirk Cousins is on his way out of Washington, his reps will almost certainly use Garoppolo’s big contract as the template for the deal Cousins signs. Since he has more experience, he could get even more money than Garoppolo.
