Murphy, 67, has not been making mound visits during this weekend's series against the Philadelphia Phillies, with that responsibility falling to pitching coach Chris Hook.
Murphy has been dealing with hip pain since last season with the issue possibly caused by a nerve in his back. He underwent rehab in the offseason for hip discomfort and after some relief, the issue has returned.
"What I have is a nerve running down my leg, and if I stand up and straighten up -- the pain, if you've had nerve pain, it's just ridiculous. I literally can't walk," Murphy said Sunday morning. "They think the back now has degenerative discs that might have to be taken care of. It might be back surgery, it might just be an epidural."
The Brewers entered Sunday's play with a 42-26 record and in first place in the National League Central. Murphy has guided Milwaukee to a 231-160 record in three seasons as the club reached the wild-card round of the playoffs in 2024, while advancing to the National League Championship Series last season.
