A new deal would ensure that Silver still has oversight of the league as it works toward a new media rights deal and potential expansion. Silver has been known to closely work with owners, management and players, more so than his predecessor, David Stern.
Silver, 61, completed formal negotiations with the board of governors to strike an extension.
In nearly 10 years as NBA commissioner, Silver has brought a number of changes to the table, including the implementation of the NBA in-season tournament and adjustments to the draft lottery that discourage teams from tanking for top picks.
Back in March of 2023, Silver and the National Basketball Players Association completed a new collective bargaining agreement that provides labor peace for at least the next five years. The agreement also featured a reworked salary cap system, allowing smaller-market teams to compete with the big markets across the league.
Silver also received a lot of praise for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, as he suspended the 2019-20 season, which eventually resumed in a bubble in Orlando, Fla.
Before his appointment as league commissioner, Silver was the NBA's deputy commissioner for eight years. Stern stepped down on Feb. 1, 2014, and Silver was the unanimous choice to replace him.
