Mandatory Credit: Jeffery Bennett-Imagn Images The San Diego Padres have agreed to a minor league deal with veteran infielder Luis Rengifo, The Athletic reported Friday.
Rengifo, 29, was released by the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday, one week after being designated for assignment.
Rengifo batted just .205 with no homers and 19 RBIs in 57 games with the Brewers. He started 45 games at third base.
Before joining Milwaukee, Rengifo spent seven seasons with the Los Angeles Angels. He batted .300 with 24 steals in 78 games in 2024 and he hit a career-best 17 homers in 2022.
Rengifo could factor in for the Padres at second base - he has 341 career starts at the position -- if he is promoted to the majors. San Diego has been using Gold Glove right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. (37 starts) at the position with Jake Cronenworth (concussion) sidelined while Manny Machado is entrenched at third base.
In 730 big league games, Rengifo has a .246 career average with 62 homers and 249 RBIs.
