Report: Red Bulls close to deal for G Ethan Horvath
United States goalkeeper Ethan Horvath runs drills during practice at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tenn., Saturday, Sept. 4, 2021.
Usmnt Prac 090421 An 010 The New York Red Bulls are nearing an agreement to land U.S. goalkeeper Ethan Horvath from Cardiff City in Wales, according to a report from The Athletic.
The club has been searching for stability at goalkeeper after the previous starter, Carlos Coronel, left as a free agent to join Brazilian Serie A club Sao Paulo when his deal expired.
Fellow keeper John McCarthy is still on the roster, but New York has made it clear it wants another proven option as it continues a busy winter overhaul.
Horvath, 30, has spent most of his prime in Europe. He opened this campaign on loan with Championship side Sheffield Wednesday and played in 16 matches before heading back to Cardiff in January.
Between his time with Cardiff and loan spells that included Luton Town and Nottingham Forest, he's compiled 97 appearances for the Welsh side. Earlier in his career, Horvath was a regular at Club Brugge, where he made 64 appearances.
He also brings international experience, collecting 10 senior caps for the United States since debuting in 2016.
If the deal goes through, it would be another step in a broader transformation. Michael Bradley has taken over as head coach, and the roster is being reshaped to match a more possession-oriented approach. The Red Bulls have already brought in winger Cade Cowell, center back Robert Voloder and right back Justin Che during the offseason.
