Saskatchewan (9-8) would finish third in the West Division with a win over Edmonton (13-4). That scenario would set up a road clash versus the BC Lions in the West semifinal.
A loss to the Elks on Saturday would land the Roughriders a fourth-place finish, make them the CFL's crossover team and set up a road encounter versus the Toronto Argonauts in the East semifinal.
Saskatchewan secured its playoff spot with a 16-12 victory over the Montreal Alouettes last Saturday, while Edmonton clinched first place in the West with a 35-27 triumph over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Oct. 16.
The Elks are expected to turn to Taylor Powell under center on Saturday after Cody Fajardo ran for two touchdowns and passed for two more in the victory over the Blue Bombers.
"That was sweet," Fajardo said. "I told the guys going in that this was Phase 3 of five and we checked that off of our list. Getting a West final in front of our fans ... I couldn't be prouder of this team."
As for the Roughriders, they have opted to give reigning Grey Cup MVP Trevor Harris, 40, a breather and hand Jack Coan his first CFL start on Saturday. Coan has completed two passes for 15 yards this season.
"I slept on it, slept pretty good, had a good night's sleep," Saskatchewan head coach Corey Mace said. "We're gonna let Jack spin. Trevor's a competitor; he didn't want to not play, but that's why you love him. I think deep, deep, deep down inside he understands.
"In this situation, I thought it was the right decision. Jack's earned an opportunity. With Trev, he's had a great year. He's played every game, he's been available. But we didn't put ourselves in a position to have a bye week and let the body rest up, so (I) made that decision this week."
Each team has won one game against the other by two points this season. The Elks posted a 36-34 victory in Regina on July 23 before Saskatchewan rebounded with a 28-26 win in Edmonton on Aug. 1.
