Streaking SMU's big offensive showing beats Boston College
Southern Methodist Mustangs head coach Andy Enfield watches his team during the first half of their game in the Acrisure Series in Palm Desert, Calif., Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2024. Matt Cross tossed in a team-high 20 points and SMU extended its winning streak to six games by beating host Boston College 103-77 on Saturday in an Atlantic Coast Conference game in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
Cross, who was born in nearby Beverly, Mass., made 7 of 9 field-goal attempts, including each of his three shots from 3-point territory. He also finished the game with a team-high eight rebounds.
Boopie Miller had 18 points and seven assists for the Mustangs (10-2, 2-0 ACC), who shot 64.4 percent from the field (38 of 59). B.J. Edwards (16 points), Chuck Harris (14) and Jerrell Colbert (13) also scored in double figures for SMU, which made 11 of its 16 3-point attempts. Harris made 4 of his 5 from beyond the arc.
BC (7-5, 0-2) received a game-high 22 points from Donald Hand Jr. and 20 from Dion Brown. Elijah Strong added 10 points and 10 rebounds. Hand and Brown each connected on three 3-pointers.
The Eagles committed 16 turnovers in the loss.
It was the first time BC has allowed at least 100 points in a game since a December 2020 home loss to Syracuse.
SMU made 16 of 27 field-goal attempts (59.3 percent) in the first half and had a 47-40 halftime lead. The Mustangs were 5 of 6 from 3-point range over the opening 20 minutes.
BC led 21-13 about seven minutes into the game, but a Harris 3-pointer capped a 9-0 run that moved SMU in front 22-21. A Miller 3-pointer gave SMU a 38-28 advantage with 4:23 left in the half.
Cross scored 17 of his 20 points before halftime, when he was 6 of 7 from the field.
The Eagles trailed 66-63 following a Strong layup with 11:43 to play, but SMU extended its lead to 78-67 following back-to-back dunks by Keon Ambrose-Hylton. A 19-2 run handed the Mustangs a 97-71 advantage with 2:59 to play.
