Tomas Tatar's two tallies take Kraken past Blackhawks
Jan 24, 2024; Seattle, Washington, USA; Seattle Kraken forward Jared McCann (19), second from right, is congratulated by forward Jordan Eberle (7), forward Tomas Tatar (90), defenseman Justin Schultz (4), second from left, and defenseman Brian Dumoulin (8) after scoring a goal against the Chicago Blackhawks during the first period at Climate Pledge Arena. credits: Stephen Brashear-USA TODAY Sports Tomas Tatar scored twice and Jared McCann added his team-leading 19th goal of the season as the Seattle Kraken defeated the visiting Chicago Blackhawks 6-2 on Wednesday.
Jaden Schwartz, Alex Wennberg and Brandon Tanev also tallied and Jordan Eberle and Justin Schultz had two assists apiece for Seattle, which snapped a four-game losing streak. Goaltender Joey Daccord made 33 saves for the win.
Joey Anderson and Nick Foligno scored for the Blackhawks, whose road skid reached 18 games (0-17-1) dating to a 5-3 victory on Nov. 9 at Tampa Bay. Arvid Soderblom stopped 22 of 28 shots.
After pulling within 2-1 late in the first period, the Blackhawks gave up an own goal just 15 seconds into the second.
Chicago defenseman Seth Jones outmuscled Wennberg for the puck in the right corner, then inexplicably tried to pass the puck up the center of the ice from behind his own goal line. The puck caromed off the skate of defensive partner Alex Vlasic and between the legs of the unsuspecting Soderblom. Wennberg was credited with an unassisted goal as he was the last Seattle player to touch the puck.
McCann opened the scoring at 4:34 of the first, taking a pass from Eberle from behind the Chicago net and putting a one-timer from just inside the top of the left circle into the upper far corner.
The Kraken made it 2-0 at 7:12 of the first. Andre Burakovsky's shot from the left circle went off Schwartz's lower left leg at the far post and into the net.
Anderson got the Blackhawks on the board at 17:20 of the first, redirecting Jones' shot from the right point.
Tanev made it 4-1 at 17:28 of the second on a one-timer from the right circle after taking a cross-ice pass from Brian Dumoulin.
The teams traded goals early in the third.
Foligno scored on a power play just 39 seconds into the period, tapping a pass from Philipp Kurashev into the net.
Tatar converted a breakaway at 4:28, seconds after Daccord stopped Chicago's Ryan Donato on a similar play at the other end of the ice.
Tatar capped the scoring at 16:22 on a blast from the left circle.
