Mandatory Credit: D. Ross Cameron-Imagn Images Ben Rice drove in four runs, and Trent Grisham and Max Schuemann each had two RBIs as the New York Yankees rode a 13-run third inning to a 13-8 win over the Athletics on Saturday in West Sacramento, Calif.
The Yankees sent 18 hitters to the plate and took a 13-3 lead in the third on 11 hits and four walks. The inning opened with 12 straight Yankees reaching base. Anthony Volpe's broken-bat blooper got things started, and after he stole second, Schuemann and Austin Wells drew walks to load the bases.
Paul Goldschmidt's infield single knocked in Volpe, and Rice singled over first base to score Schuemann and Wells. Aaron Judge's RBI single into shallow center field scored Goldschmidt. Cody Bellinger singled to right field to load the bases again and end the afternoon for A's starter Jacob Lopez.
Reliever Michael Kelly issued an RBI walk to Jose Caballero and Grisham singled in Judge and Bellinger to make it 7-3. Volpe's second hit of the inning plated Caballero, and Schuemann laced a two-run double to left field.
After Wells walked, Goldschmidt struck out looking for the inning's first out. Rice blasted a two-run triple to right field, and after Judge struck out, Bellinger's single scored Rice as New York took an 10-run lead. A Caballero single sent the A's back to the bullpen for Jack Perkins, their second reliever of the inning, who induced a Grisham pop fly to end the onslaught.
Rice, Bellinger and Volpe each had two hits to lead the Yankees to a series win. Brent Rooker doubled and homered, and Jonah Heim hit a three-run shot for the A's.
Earlier, in the first inning, the A's took a 2-0 lead when Grisham mishandled Heim's two-out popup for an error, allowing Carlos Cortes and Tyler Soderstrom to score. One batter later, Lawrence Butler's RBI single scored Heim.
Rooker's solo shot and Heim's three-run bomb cut the A's deficit to 13-7 in the seventh. In the eighth, Nick Kurtz added an RBI double.
Lopez (4-3) gave up seven runs on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts in two innings. New York's Will Warren (7-1) allowed three runs (all unearned) on six hits, walked three and fanned five.
