Yankees sign former top prospect Jarred Kelenic to minor league deal

The New York Yankees became the latest team to take a chance on former top outfield prospect Jarred Kelenic by signing the 2018 first-round draft pick to a minor league contract Saturday.

Kelenic, 27, is set to report to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after he became a free agent when he declined minor league assignment by the Texas Rangers.

A former No. 6 overall draft pick by the New York Mets, Kelenic has appeared in major league games for the Seattle Mariners, Atlanta Braves, Chicago White Sox and Rangers.

In 36 games for the White Sox and Rangers this season, he was batting .219 with one home run and six RBIs. He is a career .211 hitter with 50 home runs and 162 RBIs in 443 games over parts of six seasons.
