Yankees SS George Lombard Jr. (knee) makes early exit vs. Red Sox

The New York Yankees removed rookie shortstop George Lombard Jr. from the nightcap of their doubleheader with the visiting Boston Red Sox on Saturday night due to right knee discomfort.

The team said Lombard was undergoing imaging at New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

In the second inning, Lombard checked his swing on a pitch from Brayan Bello. Afterward, Lombard grimaced and held his right knee.

After a team athletic trainer and manager Aaron Boone checked on him, Lombard stayed in the game and singled. Lombard batted in the third and flew out to left field after the Yankees took a 3-1 lead but was lifted for the start of the fourth inning.

New York moved Jose Caballero from third base to shortstop and Amed Rosario entered the game at third.

Lombard joined the team on Aug. 4 and was the first Yankees shortstop to homer in his major league debut. The 21-year-old is batting .253 with two homers and six RBIs in 23 games since getting promoted from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
