Mandatory Credit: Kyle Ross-Imagn Images Zack Wheeler struck out nine over six strong innings and Gabriel Rincones Jr. hit his first career home run to highlight the Philadelphia Phillies' 7-0 victory over the visiting Miami Marlins on Monday.
After getting shut out twice in Milwaukee over the weekend, Philadelphia turned the tables on Miami behind Wheeler (6-1) and a trio of relievers. J.T. Realmuto also homered for the Phillies, while Justin Crawford notched three hits and drove in a run.
Liam Hicks had two of the five hits for the Marlins. Miami starter Ryan Gusto (0-2) allowed five runs and eight hits over 4 2/3 innings.
Wheeler ran into a bit of early trouble, as he allowed a single and a walk to open the contest. However, he recovered to retire the next three hitters to keep the visitors off the board.
Philadelphia also had a pair of baserunners in its half of the first, but the hosts were unable to push across a run.
The Phillies opened the scoring in the second when Rincones, playing in his second career game, launched a 1-2 pitch into the seats in right field.
Rincones also knocked in a run on a groundout in the third. That made it 2-0 before Crawford delivered an RBI single to put the Phillies ahead by three.
Wheeler recorded three strikeouts in the fourth inning and worked around a leadoff double in the fifth.
In the bottom of the fifth, Bryson Stott walked with one out before Realmuto launched a first-pitch slider over the wall in left-center field.
Wheeler needed only 10 pitches to get through the sixth, working a 1-2-3 inning to conclude his night after 97 pitches. The veteran right-hander gave up two hits and three walks as he lowered his ERA to 2.01.
Tim Mayza logged the seventh for Philadelphia before Jonathan Bowlan struck out two in the eighth. After the Phillies added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom half, Chase Shugart slammed the door in the ninth.
