Mandatory Credit: Benny Sieu-Imagn Images The Philadelphia 76ers traded second-year center/forward Johni Broome and a 2027 second-round draft pick to the Los Angeles Clippers for cash considerations on Tuesday.
The trade will allow the 76ers to stay under both the first and second aprons after signing LeBron James and guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope -- the latter planning to first agree to a buyout with the Memphis Grizzlies, ESPN reported. Caldwell-Pope's buyout was set for 5 p.m. ET on Tuesday, and afterward he will sign a one-year, $3.9 million deal with the 76ers, per media reports.
The 2027 draft pick will be second-most favorable between the most favorable of (first priority) Houston/Indiana/Miami/Oklahoma City; or (second priority) the most favorable of Golden State/Phoenix; or (third priority) Philadelphia's own second-round pick.
Philadelphia selected Broome in the second round (35th overall) in the 2025 NBA Draft out of Auburn.
The 24-year-old sustained a torn meniscus in his right knee on Feb. 21 while playing with the Delaware Blue Coats of the G League.
Broome played in 11 regular-season games as a reserve with the 76ers and totaled 10 points, 16 rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks in 55 minutes. He also totaled eight minutes in two playoff games and produced seven points, two rebounds and one assist.
Caldwell-Pope, 33, who played with James on the 2020 NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers, must clear waivers before signing with Philadelphia.
James, 41, and the 76ers officially announced on Monday that the four-time NBA Most Valuable Player and league's career scoring leader had signed a two-year deal at the veteran's minimum of $8 million total.
