The Next Gen ATP Finals are the season-ending event for the top-ranked male players 21 and under. The event format calls for best-of-five play, with four games winning the set.
Both Fils and Medjedovic were undefeated after the round-robin group stage, and they kept their records clean Friday.
Fils, a Frenchman who was the tournament's top seed, defeated countryman Luca Van Assche 2-4, 4-1, 4-3 (1), 4-3 (6). Fils won 39 of his 45 first-service points (86.7 percent) and had a 24-14 edge in total winners.
Serbia's Medjedovic advanced when Swiss opponent Dominic Stricker retired due to a back injury during the second set. Medjedovic led 4-3 (5), 2-1 at the time.
