Copa Del Rey Ends In Havoc: Ronaldo Sent Off, Fights, Debris Attacks
Atlético Madrid pulled off a shocker in winning Spain's Copa del Rey trophy today, upsetting favored Real Madrid in extra time and winning the national competition for the first time since 1996. They did this amidst a wild scene at Santiago Bernabéu that featured 15 bookings, a fight, and players being attacked by projectiles hurled by fans.
You can see most of the closing moments above, in which Cristiano Ronaldo is given a straight red for appearing to kick Atlético's Gabi in the face. Whether he did or not isn't clear in the video, but Ronaldo deserved a sending-off after committing several fouls earlier in the match that escaped the referee's book.
The incident sparked a tussle on the touch lines, with at least one punch getting thrown. Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho had already been ejected in the 76th minute, but was somehow allowed to communicate with his team via a speaker phone. Atlético keeper Thibaut Courtois would then go down after being struck in the back of the head by an object thrown from the stands, but the score would hold up and ensure that Sergio Ramos would not have the chance this year to again destroy the Copa del Rey. João Miranda would end up being the hero, with his 98th-minute goal making the difference. [ESPN Deportes]
