Berger, who has not played since the 2022 U.S. Open because of back issues, is in the field for The American Express at La Quinta, Calif.
In addition to a lower disc issue in his back, the 30-year-old Berger had been dealing with deep bone sensitivity issues, according to Golf Digest.
A four-time winner on the PGA Tour, Berger played for the United States Ryder Cup team in 2019 and helped his side to a 19-9 victory over Europe. Berger went 2-1-0 during his three matches at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisc.
A Florida native, Berger's most recent PGA Tour victory came at AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in 2021. He also is a back-to-back winner at the FedEx St. Jude Classic in 2016 and 2017. He has four top-10 finishes in a major, including a tie for sixth in the 2018 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills, N.Y.
