Vasquez-Imagn Images Los Angeles Dodgers closer Edwin Diaz will undergo surgery on his pitching elbow Wednesday and is expected to be sidelined until the second half of the season.
The Dodgers announced Monday that Diaz will have the surgery at Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic in the Los Angeles area to remove loose bodies from his right elbow.
Diaz, 32, was placed on the 15-day injured list as the Dodgers recalled left-hander Jake Eder from Triple-A Oklahoma City.
A three-time All-Star with the Seattle Mariners (2018) and New York Mets (2022, 2025), Diaz is in his first season with the Dodgers and has made seven appearances thus far. He has a 1-0 record and four saves but has pitched to a 10.50 ERA (seven earned runs in six innings).
His ERA ballooned Sunday when he gave up three runs on three hits while failing to record an out in the eighth inning against the Colorado Rockies.
Diaz is 29-36 with a 2.91 ERA in 527 career relief appearances. He has thrown 849 strikeouts against 187 walks across 525 1/3 innings since entering the league with Seattle in 2016.
Eder, 27, made his major league debut in 2024 with the Chicago White Sox, playing just one game for them, and appeared in eight games for the Los Angeles Angels in 2025. He is 0-1 with a 4.87 ERA at the major league level and has a 3.38 ERA in three appearances (5 1/3 innings) at Oklahoma City.
