Tracking The Sportswriter Hacks
This image was lost some time after publication. Yesterday, we speculated how much backtracking each of the major sports pundits would do if they were wrong about last night's Game 7 of the NBA Finals. Here's a look:
Mitch Lawrence, . After declaring "Tim, Spurs are done" yesterday, Mitch Lawrence checks in today and pretends it never happened. His column criticizes Duncan for playing lousy and managing to win anyway. Sample: "More than anything else, Tim Duncan and the Spurs managed to survive."
Michael Wilbon, . Wilbon on Thursday: "Yes, the Pistons are the better team. Tougher, and more resolute." Wilbon today: "Everything about sports is today. Yesterday's greatness becomes irrelevant quick and in a hurry if you don't repeat it today."
Bill Simmons, ESPN. Bill's predictions are quite valuable, if you always believe the opposite. After Bill boldly stated on Thursday that Chauncey Billups would steal the show and win another MVP award, Billups of course responded by hitting just three shots in Game 7 and finished with 13 points. Today in his long-winded column — as you've seen — Simmons avoids mentioning his prediction. There is a reference to middleweight boxer Winky Wright, however. Because Bill's really into boxing. Because he's a real man, you see.
